Discovery™ II System Controllers

The Marvell Discovery™ II family of system controllers for MIPS and PowerPCprocessor-based subsystems are Marvell's most advanced, highest performing system controllers to date. These new system controllers build upon Marvell's industry-standard Discovery platform and establish new benchmarks for performance and integration—making Discovery II system controllers the industry's most powerful controllers. Offering an innovative crossbar architecture, advanced communications peripherals and performance tuned interfaces, the Discovery II system controllers enable system designers to build high-performance, scalable systems.

The Marvell Discovery II MV64340, MV64341 and MV64342 devices are designed for 64-bit MIPS microprocessors such as the PMC-Sierra™ RM7000A/B/C and the Sandcraft SR71000. These devices support MIPS processor's traditional SysAD bus, as well as extended PMC-Sierra MIPS bus protocols—up to 133 MHz/LVTTL and 166 MHz/HSTL—for maximum processor-to-peripheral communications bandwidth.

The Marvell Discovery II MV64360, MV6361 and MV6362 devices are designed for PowerPC processors such as the Motorola MPC74xx and MPC75x families and the IBM 750CXe/FX series CPUs. These devices support PowerPC processors and both the 60x and the advanced Motorola MPX bus protocols. The Marvell Discovery II MV6436x devices are the only system controllers to support Symmetrical Multi-Processing (SMP) in both 60x and MPX modes, enabling highest processor performance.

With a suite of six devices offering a rich feature mix, the Discovery II system controllers are ideally suited for a broad application range, from demanding networking applications such as core routers and wireless base stations to high volume embedded markets such as storage networking and imaging applications.  With its dual PCI-X and multiple Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) interfaces, the Discovery II devices enable Fibre Channel, iSCSI and Serial ATA storage applications.

Revolutionary Architecture, Advanced Features

The Marvell Discovery II devices feature an advanced high-performance crossbar switch architecture with any-to-any connectivity. With up to 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps) of aggregate throughput, the crossbar fabric supports non-blocking concurrent connections among peripherals at full bus speeds, delivering break-through performance for advanced Internet infrastructure equipment.

The Discovery II system controllers are highly integrated and offer leading-edge peripherals on-chip, including up to three GbE Media Access Controllers (MACs), up to two PCI-X interfaces and DDR memory support. In addition, some Discovery II devices offer an integrated 2 Megabits of cache coherent SRAM that resides on the processor interface unit to provide low latency storage for descriptors, packets, etc.

All Discovery II system controllers are software compatible with other Discovery II devices as well as with other leading Marvell system controller products, offering significant time-to-market time savings and reduced risk.
